Adhiban mauls Tiviakov
India International Master B Adhiban
scripted a monumental victory by
getting better of the applecart for top seed Sergei Tiviakov in the
ninth and penultimate round of the 1st SCS International Open GM Chess
Tournament at hotel Swosti Plaza here on Saturday.
Playing with black color, Chennai teenager Adhiban gained on Russia
Grandmaster Tiviakov’s mistakes to achieve the biggest win of
the career. ``I never expected to win against a giant like Tiviakov.
It’s a dream come true for me,’’ said the
16-year-old Adhiban, who clinched victory in 25 moves.
Meanwhile, Russia Grandmaster Igor Kurnosov maintained his sole lead
even though he was held to a draw by Ukraine GM Yaroslav Zinchenko.
Kurnosov now has 7.5 points, half a point ahead of 10 others, who
shared the second place.
MS Thejkumar was another Indian player to cause an upset in the ninth
round. He outplayed Russia Grandmaster Sergey Vokarev to share the
second place with Adhiban, Abhijeet Gupta, Zinchenko, Anuar
Ismagambetov, Yuriy Kuzubov, Yuri Drozdovskij, Georgy Timoshenko, Roman
Ovetchkin and Andrey Rychagov.
According to Chief arbiter R Anantharam, two Indian players Shyam
P Nikil (TN) and Bitan Banerjee (WB) secured IM norms on the day.
Anwesh Upadhyaya (6 points) led the campaign for host Orissa by posting
a creditable draw against International Master Arghyadip Das. A win in
the ninth round would have helped the local boy earn his first IM norm.
Orissa Woman International Masters Kiran Manisha Mohanty and Padmini
Rout joined Upadhyaya at the sixth place with contrasting results.
Kiran held IM Suvrajit Saha to a draw, while Rout notched up an
impressive win over Woman Grand Master Natalia Zdebskaja (Ukraine).
Orissa’s two IMs experienced mixed luck with Swayangsu
Satyapragyan (5.5) splitting point with Hasan Mehdi (Bangladesh) and
Sekhar Chandra Sahu (5) going down to AK Kalshyam.
Among other well-known Orissa players, Soumya Ranjan Mishra, Utkal
Ranjan Sahoo, Mohammad Ashraf, Pabitra Mohan Mohanty and Rajendra Kumar
Sahu suffered defeats, while Sidhant Mohapatra and Manoj Kumar
Panigrahi won their respective games.
