Turov leads 7/8, Rathnakaran stuns
Vokarev

Second seeded Russian Grand Master Maxim
Turov maintained his lead with seven
points after a draw against Grandmaster
Aleksej Aleksandrov of Belaurs in the
eighth round of the of the 2nd SCS
International Open GM Chess Tournament
at Hotel Swosti Premium, Bhubaneswar.
Aleksandrov along with GMs Martyn
Kravtsiv (Ukraine), Pavel Maletin
(Russia) shared the second spot with 6.5
points each. Eighteen players, including
eight Indians occupied the third
position with six points each.
It appeared to be a day of peace, as the
top five boards ended without result.
But not for the Indian International
Master K Rathnakara. Playing a
spectacular middle game, the Indian IM
stunnded GM Sergey Vokarev (Russia) in a
French game that lasted 24 moves.
Rathnakaran began with a knight
sacrifice on the 16th move with Nxd4. An
unsuspecting Vokarev, walked into
further trouble, as he gave back the
knight leaving the king unguarded.
The Indian came up with a stunning queen
sacrifice 20...Qh3 that undid the
Russian Grandmaster, who gave up four
moves later.
13-year-old Vaibhav Suri (5.5) continued
his giant-killing run defeating veteran
Indian GM Dibyendu Barua (4.5). With
this win, Suri secured an IM norm.
According to Chief Arbiter
V.Ravichandran, a victory over
Bangladesh GM Enamul Hossain in the
ninth round on Friday would earn Suri
his maiden GM Norm.
Also confirmed was the IM norm for
Hungarian WGM Ticia Gara,(5.5) who,
however, lost her marathon eighth game
against Russian GM Evgeny Vorobiov.
Local star WIM Padmini Rout would get
her first WGM Norm if she scores over
experienced Hungarian GM Zoltan Varga in
the next round.
